This Kenyan startup uses artificial intelligence to improve education

M-Shule, a member of the first cohort of Injini’s incubation programme, is a personalised mobile learning platform designed to improve learning outcomes for millions of learners in Kenya and sub-Saharan Africa. It delivers curriculum-aligned lessons to primary school students through short message service (SMS) and performance data and insights to parents and schools.

M-Shule came about after comprehensive research was done by co-founders Claire Mongeau and Julie Otieno that sought to identify technological innovations from around the world that would best address children’s needs in education in Kenya and Sub-Saharan Africa.

The learning platform seeks to continue growing and expanding to other regions in Kenya and beyond as well to impact more primary school learners who do not have access to quality education. Secondly, they seek to see learners on the platform graduate from primary school with the required numeracy and literacy levels.
In 2017, Injini founder, Jamie Martin, visited Nairobi, Kenya to present the new EdTech incubator at the Edtech East Africa meetup.

M-Shule were drawn to Injini’s mission to improve educational outcomes across Africa as it was aligned to what they wanted to achieve.
“What was fundamentally compelling was the prospect of engaging with other education startups, funders, and advocates to collaborate towards greater change,” says Claire.

Since joining Injini’s incubation programme, M-Shule has been able to utilise more tools for business development and work with even more communities to drive transformative impact to learners.

“We’d like to sincerely thank Injini for the opportunity, and its role in improving education in the continent.”

M-shule would like to encourage other EdTech startups to apply as soon as possible for Injini’s incubation programme in order to facilitate holistic change in Africa’s education sector.
