Innovation in Africa: Cellphone data helping to build credit risk profiles for farmers

Information and media company Thomson Reuters has in recent years appointed Saidah Nash Carter as its Head of Innovation in Africa. Carter has been based in Cape Town for around 18 months and, in this interview, she tells BizNews about some of the innovations that her company has been working on. Thomson Reuters, of course, is well known for its news business, but the bulk of the company’s revenues come from providing other information services to the likes of financial and legal firms. Interestingly, Carter and her team are based in a popular co-working startup hub in the trendy Woodstock area of Cape Town, which has become synonymous with providing green shoots for South Africa and Africa’s startup scene. – Gareth van Zyl.
