South Africa’s higher education sector is about to take a giant leap forward and UVU Bio is leading the way.
The Department of Science, Technology and Innovation (DSTI) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) have appointed UVU Bio to spearhead a national research initiative designed to transform innovation and entrepreneurship within universities, with a special focus on historically disadvantaged institutions (HDIs), where untapped potential is often constrained by limited resources.
UVU Bio’s role is to uncover systemic gaps, design actionable strategies, and help institutions turn research into commercially viable solutions. With a track record in research commercialisation, inclusive innovation, and entrepreneurship, UVU Bio is uniquely positioned to make this vision a reality.
This research initiative is important because it’s about ensuring that a brilliant idea from an HDI has the same chance to succeed as one from a well-funded university. From shared infrastructure and national frameworks to mentorship and strategic funding partnerships, the outcomes could redefine how higher education contributes to economic growth.
Over the next few months, UVU Bio will host collaborative workshops across the country to validate findings, strengthen partnerships, and co-create solutions that work on the ground.
Workshop dates:
Durban: 18-19 August
Pretoria: 2-3 September
Limpopo: 5 September
Cape Town: 8-9 September

This is an exciting initiative and a step towards an equitable future where every student, researcher, and institution can innovate without limits.
