Call for Proposal: Design of Biotechnology Shared Laboratory Facility in Kigali 

UVU Bio, a specialised biotech incubator dedicated to promoting synergy among science, business, and investment in Africa, is delighted to invite proficient architects to engage in a distinctive prospect. We are actively seeking imaginative concepts for the layout of our forthcoming collaborative laboratory establishment, situated in the dynamic city of Kigali, Rwanda. Kindly note that the design should be based on the attached floor plan provided for reference. 

UVU Bio envisions a cutting-edge laboratory facility that will serve as a hub of excellence for biotechnology entrepreneurs, researchers, and innovators. This facility will house state-of-the-art laboratories catering to microbiology, tissue culture, analytical chemistry teaching, bioprocess, and Agri processing, fostering advancements in multiple fields. 

We invite a design team with a passion for pushing boundaries to deliver a design that seamlessly blends functionality, sustainability, and aesthetic appeal. The selected team will play a pivotal role in shaping an environment that nurtures innovation and collaboration within the biotech community, and would be required to provide: 

  • Initial site assessment and stakeholder interviews. 
  • Architectural design that optimizes space, flexibility, and technology integration. 
  • Engineering assessments, including structural, electrical, HVAC, and plumbing considerations. 
  • Legal considerations pertaining to Rwandan building and environmental codes. 
  • Deliverables: Architectural and engineering drawings, 3D renderings, project report, timeline, and budget. 
  • Space planning and appropriate laboratory set-up for the lab users, prep rooms, storerooms office space, walk-in incubator rooms etc., which will include re-design of the existing structure and repurposing of existing materials. The service provider will be required to consider all elements of Occupational Health and Safety. 
  • A specification for implementation of the proposed design, implementation plan and estimated total cost and duration of the project which should take no longer than 6 months to complete upon appointment. 
  • Power & data layouts, sufficient for coordination with the electrical engineer. 
  • Piping layout, sufficient for coordination with engineer  
  • Door, window, and Shopfront schedules 
  • Services coordination of the various consultants 
  • Joinery, including amended benching layouts 
  • Project Management and Principal Agent oversight

The successful candidate will enter into a contractual agreement with UVU Bio, outlining their commitment to providing detailed design drawings, specifications, accurate cost estimates, and diligent construction supervision services.
