In February, CapaCiTi announced its offer to immediately cancel the contingent student loans currently held by its previous cohorts.
The Digital Career Accelerator recognised how the ongoing pandemic and current job market has impacted CapaCiTi graduates and their ability to meet their financial obligations. CapaCiTi hoped the loan cancellation would ease the difficulties faced by its graduates.
The offer was extended to over one thousand candidates who still held a loan with CapaCiTi. All graduates that had paid their loan in full were reimbursed in full.
We caught up with one of the graduates to see how being reimbursed has impacted his daily life.
Imran Kadri has always been passionate about IT. Even though he started his journey working at a call centre, he would help people with IT as a hobby, eventually completing his first year in IT at Damelin part-time.
In 2020, he joined the CapaCiTi family, studying Systems Development.
“It was a challenging programme that really put my abilities to the test and made me realise my potential. I was in the front end stream, so we did mostly web development using HTML, CSS and JavaScript, but we also did a bit of Python,” shares Imran.
He considers the reimbursement a real blessing.
“It’s a HUGE weight off my shoulders and it’s a real blessing, given the tough times 2020 presented us with. Didn’t see it coming, and it’s a really kind gesture from CapaCiTi and all the parties involved.”
He adds that #LoanFree has made a difference in his life.
“It’s allowed me to provide more for my family and give more charity. I’m going to save it for a rainy day.”
Imran, who’s currently working for Amazon, had a few words of gratitude to share.
“I’d really like to thank the funders from the bottom of my heart. You guys are making a big difference in people’s lives and the country as a whole. Your kindness won’t go unnoticed.
To the other alumni, don’t ever forget your experiences at CapaCiTi and the tough challenges you’ve endured and overcome because that always gives me strength and I’m sure it would work the same for you guys. Stay positive and keep smiling, no matter how tough things get, and always be real. Never forget your roots.
To the future students, I just want you guys to know that you’re in good hands. CapaCiTi is very supportive and has your best interest at heart. They want you to grow and prosper and will help you get a job placement. All you have to do is stick it through, no matter how tough things get. I understand that many of us are hindered due to circumstances, but CapaCiTi is very supportive, so please don’t hesitate to reach out to them and they will go out of their way to help you.
To the CapaCiTi team, thanks so much for providing me with this opportunity – the opportunity to meet these wonderful, inspiring hopefuls, and for providing me with the skills necessary to handle almost any hardship or challenge that I’m faced with in life. Times were tough last year when COVID-19 was at its peak, but even so, we stood tall and we got through it, and I really appreciate your continued, unwavering support throughout.”
