Highlights from SA EdTech Week 2024

Injini successfully hosted their third annual SA EdTech Week 2024  at d-school Afrika*, University of Cape Town. This highly anticipated three-day event delivered in partnership with Mastercard Foundation was a unique gathering that gave likeminded individuals an opportunity to exchange ideas, and address challenges in the EdTech sector.

Day one focused on empowering teachers and EdTech implementors through co-design, training, and hands-on workshops, exploring various ways technology can enhance learning environments. On day two, key players in Africa’s education ecosystem explored the transformative potential of collaborations. Panel discussion topics such as “EdTech Evidence in Practice” featured valuable insights from organisations like Edulution, Grow ECD, Firdale Consulting, and the Roger Federer Foundation, while the “Impact Investing to Scale” panel spotlighted contributions from the Mr Price Foundation and Oppenheimer Memorial Trust.

Keynote Address by Rachel Kolisi, Co-Founder of the Kolisi Foundation

The third day included a keynote address by Rachel Kolisi. During her sincere and heartfelt address, Rachel admitted that she struggled academically at school and wished that she had access to digital educational tools that are available nowadays.  “The work done in EdTech is important for children across the world that are not academically inclined,” she emphasized. The Kolisi Foundation is focused on developing tailor-made programmes to address malnutrition and the lack of physical education in schools.  

Power of Networking Unlocked through Speed Dating

SA EdTech Week strategically included a speed dating concept that made it easier for guests to engage with each other.  The networking sessions were a success because diverse perspectives were shared, collaborations discussed, and new working relationships were formed.

South Africa is undergoing a digital transformation that is reshaping the education sector and EdTech innovations are emerging as powerful tools to address complex educational challenges.  12 EdTech entrepreneurs from the Mastercard Foundation EdTech Fellowship Program as well as other founders in the sector exhibited their digital innovations and presented their EdTech solutions at the event. There was excitement in the room as they boldly showcased their impactful digital tools.

After the panel discussions, the roaming microphone was highly sought after as guests grabbed the opportunity to ask their questions.  They received clarity on complex issues, actively participated in discussions, and received tailored responses.  The audience were a huge part of the conversations through the question-and-answer sessions. 

SA EdTech Week 2024 was a success as it showcased South Africa’s vibrant and innovative EdTech landscape. Through insightful panel discussions, inspiring keynote addresses, and dynamic networking opportunities, the event fostered collaborations, knowledge sharing, and played a pivotal role in educating the next generation of learners.
